Are Television Shows Increasing Violence?
Why is there a lot of bullying and violent acts at school? Many people believe that children are imitating almost everything from what they watch on television shows. Or even though some of people say that parents control the television show that their children watch, I believe that television is increasing violence among kids, because of the great amount of the time children watch television, and the great persentage of violent acts, and, unfortunately, many children learn about life through television and they just imitate the violence they see.
The great amount of the time children watch television is showing that children spend too much time just watching television. "Children in the United States watch about four hours of TV every day" (American...). Actually, they are supposed to watch television just 2 hours each day, and children under 2 years old are not recommended to watch television at all. "By the time the average American child turns 18, he or she will have witnessed approximately 100.000 acts of televised violence" (Update...). Because too much spending time on television so then children witness a lot of violence.
The great persentage of violent acts on television, shows how much violence on tv nowadays. "Increase in persentage of violent acts per hour on network television between 2000-01 and 2006-07 is 57%" (By...). The violence on tv is getting worse every year, meaning the more violent acts on television, the more children learn about violence. "When adults in April 1999 poll were asked which policy measures would be effective at curbing school violence, they said regulation of violence in tv and film is 52%" (Public...). Because school violence is significant problem in the USA, and polls said that television is one the most thing that makes it happened, it means that too much violence on television nowadays.
Many children learn about life through television and imitating the violence they see on tv. Children are no more learning about life from parents, environment, or even school. Children prefer watch television to any other activity, and parents can barely monitor their kids. This gives them bad habits and behaviors. "Television affects how your child learns" (American...). It is possible that watching violent shows might be somehow connected to real life violent behavior among some individuals. Children learn everything about what they hear and they watch, and unfortunately what they watch is violent stuff. They just copy what they have seen today, yesterday, tomorrow, and so on. "Today's television shows may be innappropriate for childrean. Adding to the problem is the fact that an increasing number of children are watching television without adult supervision. Parents cannot always monitor what their children are watching"(Television...) That's the problem! Children learn everything about what they hear and watch. And no adults supervision makes children learn about life just through television. Entertainment that depicts, promotes and encourages seemingly senseless violence or promiscuous sexual behavior, sends the wrong moral message to young people in particular. Unfortunately when they learn through television shows (entertainment), they just will get bad behavior from all of those shows. "A 2002 study published in Science Magazine, which found that 14-year-olds who watch more than 3 hours of television a day are far more likely to instigate aggressive acts in the short term than 14-year-old who watch television for an hour or less each day" (Update...). Because children watch too much television shows, they become so aggressive. That's just the one of impact from watching tv. TV viewing also may lead to more aggressive behavior, less physical activity, altered body image and increased use of drugs and alcohol.
So, because of the great amount of the time children watch tv, and too much violence stuff on it and they learn about life through television (based on what they watch and hear), that's why I believe that television is increasing the violence around our environment. Nowadays it becomes a serious problem in the US. Do we just want to leave it like that and see our school becomes so violence? And do we wanna see our children kill each other later? So, I really believe that tv is increasing violent acts in real life and we need to do something to make it better.
